Iron Sand Megaproject Denied By Fishermen Association

BANDUNG: Indonesian Fishermen Association (HNSI) Garut refuse purification plant investment plans iron sand from Chinese investors in south Garut region. General Secretary of HSNI Garut Lukman Nurhakim said if the iron processing plant with an investment US$1.5 billion is realized it will damage marine life in south coast Garut. “We balked at the plan. This plant can damage biological richness in South Garut.” He said Wednesday (9/5/2012) According to him, the establishment of the factory with 6 million tons capacity is definitely will be accompanied by the construction of dock or harbor as a transport of iron sand. “This is in accordance with the government rules that processed iron sand cannot be transported iron sand through the land, but must through sea route,” he said. Lukman said the presence of the plant with the giant capital of the economy and welfare of the citizen can give benefit. However, he said, local government must also protect the biological richness. Head of Department of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Jabar Yerri said it has not received detailed information about the iron sand investment. “Indeed, the issuance is regional authorities. However, to date we have not received a new permit recommendations” he said. This is stated in accordance with the circular Governor of west Java on the iron sand mining moratorium in South West Java in 2011. Meanwhile, one point is suspended issuing of new permits for exploration and production activities of mining until the issuance of the mining license area (WIUP) and mining area (WUP) by the ministry of Energy. “Although still in the investment plan, investors must take prior authorization.
